Dal Makhni is a popular North Indian dish. It is made from whole black lentil and kidney beans along with some Indian spices cooked with butter and cream.In my recipe am not using any cream or butter. I would say this recipe is a skinny version compared to the traditional one.
Lentil soak time-Overnight 8-10hrs
Pressure cook time 25mins
prep time 15mins
3/4 cup whole Black lentil
1/4 cup Red kidney beans
Procedure for cooking the lentils:
1)Wash and soak lentils overnight for 10-12hrs.
2)Wash and pressure cook on a stove with 4 to 5 cups of water for 8-10 whistles. Set it aside.
Ingredients for preparing Dal:
1 Onion finely chopped
4 medium size tomatoes finely chopped
2 green chilies finely chopped
1tbsp ginger garlic paste
pinch of turmeric
salt to taste
pinch of asafetida
1tbsp coriander powder
1/2tsp cumin powder
1tbsp garam masala
1/2tsp red chili powder
1tsp Extra virgin olive oil
1tbsp cream (optional) for Garnish
1tbsp Finely chopped Cilantro for garnish
1)Heat a pan on a medium flame with oil and fry onion, ginger garlic paste, green chilies until they are golden brown.
2)Add chopped tomatoes and cook until the water is evaporated. Then add all the seasoning ingredients and boiled lentils mix thoroughly.
3)Bring it to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes.Garnish with fresh cream and finely chopped cilantro.
4)Serve hot with naan,tandoori roti Indian flat breads or with steamed rice or Jeera rice.
