Drumstick Rasam(soup)

Drumstick rasam(Lentil drumstick soup) is easy to make and an integral part of our daily south indian cooking.It is tangy,spicy and flavorful.It is prepared with steamed drumstick,cooked dal and boiled along with tamarind pulp,rasam powder.It is served with steamed rice as a side.

prep time:10mins
cook time:20mins

1/4 cup cooked toor dal
-wash and pressure cook with 1/2 cup of water for 3 whistles.Switch off the flame and set aside.
2 steamed drumsticks
-Wash and chop into pieces and place them in the steamer.
1 tbsp tamarind paste
salt to taste
1tbsp rasam powder
few curry leaves
pinch of turmeric
1tsp jaggery(coconut palm sugar)

For seasoning:
1/2tsp mustard seeds
1/2tsp cumin seeds
1/4tsp fenugreek seeds
pinch of hing
1 dry red chili
1tsp oil

-Heat a large bowl with all the ingredients on a medium high heat and bring it to a boil.

-Heat a fry pan on a medium low heat then add all the seasoning ingredients.Allow them to turn golden brown.Switch of the flame and add to the soup mixture.

-Reduce the heat to low and then add the seasoning.Garnish with few cilantro leaves and serve it with steam rice or quinoa.

-If fresh drumsticks unavailable.You can buy them frozen in Indian grocery store.
