Methi Moong dal

This is yet another simple dal but very flavorful with methi leaves(Fenugreek leaves) and tomato cooked along with Moong dal. It goes well with pulka, roti ,steamed rice & quinoa.

Serves 4


2 Bunches of Methi leaves(Separate leaves from the stems wash ,cut them and set aside)
2 medium size tomato (chopped)
2 green chilies(chopped)
1/2 cup of Moong dal
salt to taste
pinch of turmeric
1 tbsp Tamarind paste
1 tbsp cilantro(for garnish)

Cooking Moong Dal instruction:
Wash and cook moong dal in a pressure cooker for 3-4 whistles .Allow it to cool down before you take the whistle off the cooker and mash the lentils with back of the ladle and set a side

For Seasoning:

1/2tsp Urad dal
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1 whole red chilles
Pinch of Hing
1 tsp Ghee


  1. Heat oil in a pan add all the seasoning allow them to splutter.
  2. Then Add chopped tomato,green chillies,roughly chopped fenugreek leaves ,tumeric,salt,red chilli powder,salt to taste, tamarind paste.Cover the pan with lid and simmer for few minutes 5 minutes.
  3. Now add Moong dal and bring it to a boil. Switch of the flame garnish with finely chopped cilantro.
  4. Serve hot with steamed rice or Indian breads.
