Gujarati Dal

Gujarati Dal is prepared using split piegon peas and it is not thick as other dals.It is easy to make and tastes kind of sweet,tangy and spicy combination of flavors.You can serve this dal with plain steamed rice or roti as a side.

Cook time:20-30mins
Makes 3-4

1/2 cup cooked split piegon peas (Toovar dal)-Use a hand blender or blender to make the dal into a smooth paste.Set aside
1 and 1/2 cups of water
1 medium tomato finely chopped
salt to taste
1 tbsp finely grated ginger
1 tsp finely chopped green chilies
1-2 tbsp palm sugar/Jaggery
1 tsp red chili powder
pinch of turmeric

For seasoning
1/2 tsp black mustard seeds
1/2 tsp cumin seeds
2 cloves
1 small piece of cinnamon stick
1 tsp ghee
1 tsp red chili flakes or 1 dry red chili
pinch of hing

For Garnish:
2 tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice
2 tbsp finely chopped cilantro

-Heat a sauce pan on medium heat add all the ingredients bring it to a boil.
-Place a small pan on medium add all the seasoning ingredient allow them to splutter.Turn off the flame and add it to the dal mixture.
-Mix everything together.Turn off the stove garnish with lemon juice and cilantro.
-Serve hot with rice or roti.

  5. I adore the cuisine and especially for the fact that the food has a slight hint of jaggery or sweet. Love the dal with steamed rice or bhakris.
